#OlderAndGreener: Activities across the UK Network

A partnership in Barnsley has begun a pilot project to add solar batteries to 75 properties for older people with existing solar panels. The ‘Smart Solar’ project could cut up to 30-40% off existing electricity bills.

Age Friendly Belfast is hosting the annual Positive Ageing Month Festival. A number of the events and activities have a climate positive focus, including a vegetarian cookery demonstration, workshop on energy efficiency in the home, litter pick and learn, and a recycling and reducing food waste webinar.

Birmingham hosted a webinar in mid-September focusing on active citizenship and the local environment. It included members of the local community who set up a litter picking group, gardening activities and also staff from two projects focusing on how to involve local citizens to change and improve their local area.

Lincs Digital is delivering a session on “Digital Pollution and the strive to be Greener” - promoting simple ways you can be greener at home and digital support.

TED East Lindsey has organised a guided walk with litter picking.

Greater Manchester is running a communications campaign to mark IDOP, with the theme, ‘Older and Greener: Tackling the climate emergency together in Greater Manchester’. The campaign is coordinated by the Greater Manchester Ageing Hub at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Access the campaign communications toolkit.

Talking About My Generation is launching its campaign 'This Is What An Activist Looks Like’, commissioned by the Greater Manchester Older People's Network (GMOPN). A living library event at Manchester Central Library will mark the campaign's launch, with local activists sharing inspirational personal stories. The campaign video features younger and older activists uniting in the fight against climate change.

The Manchester City Council and Age Friendly Manchester campaign aims to show that people of all ages can do their bit to make a difference. Manchester is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2038. Watch the campaign's films and case studies, featuring the Age Friendly Board.

Transport for Manchester's campaign, It’s Time To Make Plans, encourages people to get out and about and promotes active ageing as part of their building back greener work. 

Manchester Art Gallery and Pride in Ageing at LGBT Foundation are working in partnership to create a Derek Jarman Pocket Park, which will be situated at the Manchester Art Gallery. Read this blog on the project.

Newcastle is developing age-friendly and energy efficient housing through an innovative partnership with Newcastle University and Karbon Homes. The Future Homes project properties will include options to rent or buy, and have been designed for lifelong occupation.

Age Proud Newcastle is supporting #OlderAndGreener with a range of events across October focused on environmental issues, such as a climate writing workshop. This workshop offers over 50s the opportunity to explore what climate change and environmental challenge means to them.  

Nottingham plans to be carbon neutral by 2028 - the most ambitious strategy in the country. Cllr Sally Longford (Deputy Leader of the Council & Executive Member for Energy, Environment and Waste Services) who leads the work shared more information on the pledge and why she is proud to be #OlderAndGreener.

Members of Sefton’s Older People’s Forum are attending a carbon friendly training session to mark IDOP. The session is part of the Carbon Literate Communities project, hosted by Zero Carbon Liverpool City Region, funded by the Combined Authority.

The Conservation Volunteers are hosting a climate change walk and talk, including the opportunity to plant trees.

Trafford Carers Centre and Trafford Housing Trust are linking up to do some intergenerational tree planting on sites owned by the Trust.

Be Well Wigan is hosting a wellness walk and litter pick.

The annual York Environment Week was held from 18 - 26 September. This year's subject was #YorkActsTogether – Tackling Climate Change, with events from 40+ local groups exploring themes such as energy, transport, food and nature.
