South Ribble is one of twelve districts within Lancashire County Council. The district has borough status. The largest town where the council is based is Leyland. The borough includes the towns and villages of Penwortham, Leyland, Farington, Farington Moss, Hutton, Longton, Walmer Bridge, Much Hoole, Coupe Green, Salmesbury, Lostock Hall, Walton-le-Dale and Bamber Bridge. Many of the built-up areas in the borough form part of the wider Preston built-up area. 43% of South Ribble's population is aged 50 or over.
