Many older people will continue to own their own home and live in mainstream housing but the demands for housing will change as the population ages.
We need to act now to ensure older people can access decent, accessible homes that can be adapted to meet their needs. No one deserves to live in a home that puts their safety at risk or compromises their independence.
Our new report, A Vision of Ageing at Home, was released with the Fabian Housing Centre, a major research and policy programme, to help shape the implementation of the government’s housing strategy.
The project undertook primary research with older people through focus groups and reviewed existing policies regarding the improvement of homes and the impact on older people. It outlines the key issues and recommendations for ensuring people can age well in their homes, maintaining their dignity and independence.
We all deserve to live in homes where we can remain safe, warm and dry but for too many people this is not the reality.
This report sets out how the government can ensure that owner-occupiers are able to age well in their own home. It identifies the scale of the challenge faced by older owner-occupiers, the barriers to improving housing, and the case for action. The report sets out a series of solutions to improve existing stock and deliver better new-build options for older homeowners.
