Technical briefings: the Good Home Inquiry

The briefings offer a summary of key issues and potential solutions for improving England's homes in three key areas: energy efficiency, financing, and digital connectivity (to be released in July). 

The Good Home Inquiry, commissioned by the Centre for Ageing Better, provides an evidence-based analysis of England’s housing policies to determine the causes of, and solutions to, the poor quality of so much of our housing. The Inquiry is led by an independent panel and chaired by David Orr CBE.

Climate change offers a once in a generation challenge to transform our homes. The Good Home Inquiry is seeking to understand policy and intervention priorities for pathways to net zero. This briefing looks at how market mechanisms can be used to invest in improving existing homes, as well as capturing existing initiatives that can be built upon to create opportunities for change.

The Inquiry is also seeking to understand what financial solutions are available to homeowners who wish to invest in the upgrade of their homes to a good standard. A fundamental requirement is to understand existing business cases for investing in good homes and how they could be improved to become investable at scale. This briefing looks at options for government interventions such as smart taxation and regulation.

Digital connectivity is an important requirement for our homes as we spend more and more time online and are becoming increasingly reliant on digital tools across all aspects of our lives. This briefing looks at the barriers and challenges people may face to being connected to this online world.
