“We welcome the government’s steps towards sustainable funding for the social care system, which has been kicked into the long grass by successive governments. The care system is in desperate need of immediate funding, but it also needs a long term funding commitment to allow meaningful reform to take place to improve the quality of care for those of all ages.
“Though nearly half of those who receive social care are of working age, there is a danger that today’s announcement on funding could add to the perception that those of working age are paying for something that benefits older people. In fact we should expect a much more generous system where people of all ages are able to access the care they need, funded fairly. It’s not clear that today’s announcement will provide that.
“To improve quality of life and achieve sustainable levels on spending for the NHS and social care, we must also invest in preventing ill-health at all ages, to increase the number of years we spend in good health and without disability.”
