This paper sets out the Centre for Ageing Better’s response to the Work and Health Green Paper. We welcome the focus on promoting work as a health outcome, and the recognition that people with health conditions face particular barriers in relation to employment.
Our response is structured against the chapters and specific consultation questions in the Green Paper. Of all disabled people out of work, half (49%) are aged 50 to 64. Government and society cannot tackle the disability employment gap without addressing the specific barriers faced by older people with health conditions. Our response draws on our own research, the existing evidence and consultation with key stakeholders in the fields of health, employment and ageing to suggest specific measures and opportunities to do this more effectively. We look forward to continuing to engage with the Work & Health Unit as it takes this policy area forward.
