Incorporating ageism into your EDI policy
Age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. This means that it should be specifically highlighted in your EDI policy, alongside the other protected characteristics (disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion, sex and sexual orientation).
Implementing policies
As well as having the right policies and processes in place, it’s equally important to make sure that employees know what is available to them and that line managers are comfortable applying the policies and discussing them with their teams.
Empower and support your managers and leaders to have conversations with older workers about what they need in terms of support, but also their aspirations for the future. Our resources for line managers can help them get started.
Consider establishing an employee led group/forum for your older workers and, if so, make sure it is not only a safe space but also can provide feedback into systems and policies.
